The Brain and Spinal Cord Injury (BaSCI) Project at the Townsville University Hospital Rehabilitation Unit is improving access to specialist rehabilitation for individuals with ABI abd SCI across North Queensland.

Two new Rehab Outpatient Clinics are open to residents across North Queensland:

  1. Adult Concussion Clinic - for patients experiencing post-concussive symptoms at or beyond four weeks post-concussion (and up to 12 months)
  2. Multidisciplinary ABI Review Clinic - Patients with complex ABI can see three medical specialties (Rehabilitation, Neurosurgery, and Neuropsychiatry) at the same appointment and access intensive rehab from a comprehensive allied health team (Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Speech Pathology, Neuropsychology, Social Work, and an Indigenous Hospital Liaison Officer).

In this GP/Allied Health education session our rehabilitation medical and allied health team will cover the following topics:

  • Identification of patients who will benefit from referral to the Adult Concussion Clinic and Multidisciplinary ABI Review Clinic
  • What does comprehensive concussion management look like?
    • How we treat post-concussive impairments: Vision,
    • vestibular, autonomic, musculoskeletal, mood, sleep, and cognitive communication
    • Psychoeducation & improving the individual’s relationship with their physical symptoms
    • Activity analysis & structured pacing
    • Graded return to work, study, & sport
  • Discussion of patient examples from our clinic and yours
  • Q&A
