The future of mental health care in North Queensland is set to become a one-stop shop, with a “no wrong door” policy. 

Northern Queensland Primary Health Network (NQPHN) Chief Executive Officer Robin Whyte said the future of mental health care would take an integrated approach as a “one-stop shop” where a team of service providers worked together to provide wraparound care for those who needed it most. 

“Patients will be able to access not just mental health care but will also have access to a broader range of services to help them with the other socioeconomic issues that are so often linked to mental ill-health. For example, this could include support services for access to secure housing, employment, or financial counselling,” Ms Whyte said. 

“Our vision of a ‘no wrong door’ means where a person enters the care system, they are supported with the appropriate care and services to meet their needs. 

“The ultimate outcome of this integrated approach to mental health care is to help make Townsville a mentally healthy city in the future.  

“Head to Health Townsville is an example of how the system is moving to implement this broader approach to mental health care support. It’s an example of what’s being done now for the future of mental health care in the region.” 

Head to Health Townsville provides a central point for people to get help at the time they need it – and they don’t need an appointment, they can call or walk in. 

“Support is provided by mental health clinicians, along with ‘peer’ workers who have had their own experience of mental health challenges,” Ms Whyte said.  

“Peer workers are an integral part of the system, and the evidence is clear – people feel more comfortable talking to someone they know has been through their own challenges. 

“In addition to mental health support, people can access a range of other services through referral and linkage, with alcohol and other drug and housing services available onsite during set times to make it easier for people to get the support they need, without having to attend multiple service centres.” 

Head to Health Townsville is located at 32 Walker St, Townsville, and is a free service. The centre is open from 10am-10pm on weekdays and 12noon-10pm on weekends.
