These courses aim to equip registered nurses with the necessary skills and knowledge to deliver quality immunisation services across northern Queensland.
The first two courses – Immunisation Endorsement Pathway (Nurse Immuniser) and Immunisation Clinical Pathway (Immunisation Practice) – are both online, catering to the evolving needs of healthcare professionals.
The Immunisation Endorsement Pathway, designed for Registered Nurses and midwives who wish to immunise independently of a Medical Officer, has seen overwhelming interest with 140 expressions of interest and 127 enrolments.
The Immunisation Clinical Pathway, tailored for Registered Nurses and Enrolled Nurses who immunise under authorisation of a Medical Officer, has garnered 54 expressions of interest, with 38 enrolments.
Both courses include comprehensive Continuing Professional Development (CPD) study hours and a one-day virtual workshop, ensuring participants receive up-to-date training and knowledge sharing on current immunisation practices.
NQPHN Chief Executive Officer Sean Rooney said the training initiative reinforced NQPHN’s strategic aim to commission and coordinate place-based, capability-building education.
“Investing in nurse immunisation training aligns with our commitment to improving healthcare outcomes in northern Queensland,” he said.
“These courses empower healthcare professionals to deliver vital immunisation services, ultimately benefiting the health and wellbeing of our communities.
“This training will be particularly relevant as we head into the upcoming influenza and COVID-19 winter season.”
In addition to these online courses, NQPHN is also supporting a new immunisation workshop specifically tailored for Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA)- registered Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander healthcare practitioners.
This five-day workshop, scheduled for 3-7 June this year in Cairns, aims to meet all observation requirements necessary for delivering vaccination services.
With 15 expressions of interest already received across the region, this 16-person workshop promises to further enhance the capacity of Indigenous healthcare practitioners in immunisation services.

“Our aim is to provide healthcare professionals with the skills and knowledge they need to confidently administer immunisations, ensuring the highest standards of patient care,” he said.
Upon successful completion of these courses, participants will receive CPD hours certificates and a Statement of Attainment for the nationally-accredited course (Course in Immunisation Practice in Primary Healthcare 10754NAT), validating their competency in immunisation practice.
