In comparison with the Townsville and Cairns regions, it was noted that the number of referrals for children under 12 were particularly high in the Mackay region.
In response to the data demonstrating the high need for Mental Health support in Mackay’s under 12 years of age population, a roundtable forum was organised for Thursday 10 June. The forum was attended by 29 individuals representing 19 services.
The aim was:
- to collect information from a broad range of organisations and services who support children in Mackay
- to reflect upon the needs of children in the area
- to identify existing pathways and services
- to determine how to further develop supports for this vulnerable group.
Each service provider attending the forum, both in person and online, advised of the areas and scope of work they are undertaking relating to children under 12 years of age and their families.
Two case studies were discussed, each highlighting the different aspects of support required by children in Mackay. In discussing these studies, providers identified if they were suitable to meet the needs of the family or child in the scenario. These providers detailed how they would approach each of these situations. The needs of the family and child were discussed, referral pathways were highlighted and areas of support that need further development were identified.
Several findings were recorded, and the group was eager to make recommendations and take immediate action towards meeting some of these areas of need.
There was strong advocacy for a future meeting to review progress, which Connect to Wellbeing was keen to support again.
